USS CHAUMONT (AP-5) 1937 FAR EAST CRUISE

DVD Content
This DVD contains the actual, uncut footage of exceptionally rare black and white 16mm home movies that were filmed by a sailor aboard the Chaumont when she rushed to Shanghai in 1937. I know people love to throw out the "rare" word quite a bit, but I assure you, this is the real deal. Beautiful 16mm filmed by a sailor during very turbulent times.
In mid-September 1937, Chaumont rushed the 6th Marine Regiment to Shanghai to reinforce the 4th Regiment that was protecting the International Settlement during the all-out Japanese effort to seize the city from tenacious Chinese defenders. She also evacuated 2,000 civilians as she departed.
Great liberty scenes in Shanghai, which sounds crazy since there was also a war being fought between the Japanese and Chinese.
The film begins with a very old-school line crossing. But not the equator. Back then, you were also initiated when crossing the 180th parallel (International Date Line).
The following Japanese warships are also caught on film: Hayabusa, Kasasagi, Minazuki, Kikuzuki, Mikazuki, Izumo and one that part of the name is hidden, Hatsuka__. Also a cruiser and destroyer that do not have a visible name, but are clearly flying the rising sun flag. Same with a Japanese freighter, which is flying the Japanese flag (not the rising sun navy ensign).
Great scenes from around the ship while underway, including the Marines filling up weather balloons and using them for target practice for water cooled .50 machine guns. Also, a sailor painting a large American flag on the top deck, so that Japanese aircraft had no excuse for attacking…

Over 37 minutes running time.

  • Produced by GRS Videos (TM). GRS Videos is dedicated to the preservation of Naval Aviation film footage. This passion began when the son of a recently deceased Korean War veteran told me how he had thrown away all of those "old 8mm films of planes flying off of a ship". Yes, I cried. Our heritage MUST be preserved. As a veteran of Naval Aviation, I have a strong interest in ensuring that our stories are not forgotten. If you have footage (16mm, 8mm, VHS, Super 8, Beta, or Digital) contact me at PLAT_Collector@verizon.net. I will also gladly trade any footage I have for new footage (any format). So, if I have Naval Aviation footage you want, and you have something I do not have, contact me and I am confident we can work something out. I am always looking for new PLAT mishaps and home movies/video of carrier operations and life on carriers. All proceeds go into obtaining and preserving more Naval Aviation footage. Gary R. Schreffler served on USS Midway (with HS-12) from 1984-1991.
