This DVD contains 8mm and 16mm films that were shot aboard the Wasp from a period before WWII all the way to her loss on 9/15/42 when she was hit by three torpedoes fired by the Japanese submarine I-19. It is also narrated by a former Wasp crewman, who served in her during WWII.
This is great footage from a seldom seen carrier. It is an incredible chronicle of her service during WWII, operating in the Atlantic, to when she brought badly needed aircraft to the beleaguered British troops at Malta (and becoming the only U.S. Carrier to enter into the Med during WWII), to her transfer to the Pacific fleet, and her ultimate loss.
Great flight operations. Includes MANY early flight deck mishaps. You will see many, many crashes at the beginning of the film.
I could go on and on and on about what is on this DVD (UNREPS, shots of the battle group, British Swordfish fighters operating from Wasp, chipping ice in the North Atlantic, etc.). I will simply say it is one of the finest amateur chronicles of a WWII carrier I have ever seen.
A great look at a carrier conducting combat operations during World War 2.
40 minutes running time
