Summary:
I'm getting caught up with a little site maintnance and some updates. There are a lot of new pics from Gary Schreffler as he continues to scan the photos he rescued from his attic. Topics include a video another video from Operation Frequent Wind, HS-12 Mishap, tons of friends & foes, UNREPS, Steel Beach Picnic '84, Desert Storm BDA photos and more. Gary also passed on some Air Wing and Show of Strength-Ex (aka Air Show) photos from Midway Photographers Mate Scott Guido. There are also some really nice photos from John Njaa that he took during his 1972 WESTPAC tour. Photo subjects include flight ops, life on the flight deck, the Bob Hope USO show, UNREPS, and Subic Bay. I uploaded a photo of the Midway's newest aircraft attraction, a F-8K Crusader in VF-111 colors getting craned on to a floating barge. Thanks to John Mechelke for the tip on the story and photo from Navy NewsStand. John also sent me a couple of new links for the links page. One is for Naval Flight Engineers called Centerseat.net and the other is Tomcat-Sunset.org, the official F-14 Farwell ceremony commitee website.

I just found a couple of photos of the Midshipman Band and US Naval Academy cheerleaders performing in front of the USS Midway. Navy will play Colorado State in the inaugural Poinsettia Bowl tonight at Qualcomm Stadium. GO NAVY!

Summary:
Today's updates include 4 photos from James Allen of the F-14 TomKitties from the USS Enterprise that paid Midway a visit during NORPAC. I've also uploaded a lot of aircraft restoration update photos from Midway'sAircraft.org. These volunteers are doing an amazing job on the display aircraft. Many thanks to webmaster John Njaa and the many volunteers at the hangar. Check out the volunteers photo album to see them in action! In case I dont' get another update out before Christmas I wish everyone a happy and safe holiday season!
I made a small change to the GRS NAVAIR video pages per Gary's request. The quantity discount is now if you buy three DVDs you get a fourth one free. You may need to refresh the page to see the change.

Summary:
I have a lot of cool news to report! First, I hope everyone got a chance to catch the History Channel show on the USS Midway that was broadcast on December 19th. It was a great show that told the story of the ship very well, used mainly USS Midway video footage, and included a lot of new footage I hadn't seen before. If you missed it fear not. Scott McGaugh has told me that the History Channel is already working on converting the show to DVD. The time frame looks to be around Jan-Feb 2006. You can check here and at midway.org for updates.
I am happy to announce the opening of Gary Schreffler's "GRS NAVAIR Videos" DVD store. Up until now these have only been available on Ebay. Now you can order them directly from Gary through the infomation on video store page. The store contains information on all of the avaliable videos including screen captures. I set up this page for Gary as a service to him, Midway Vets, and Midway fans everywhere.
The latest uploads include a 1958 Midway photo from Gary Schreffler as well as a video clip of South Vietnamese Major Bung Li landing his Bird Dog on the Midway during Operation Frequent Wind. I also uploaded some great photos from VA-115 shipmate José Lahoz he took during his 1983-84 tour. Lastly there is a 1947 photo of the Midway I won on Ebay and a Spad photo in the VA/VMA Ready Room 3 page courtesy of Bill Gilchrist.

Summary:
I hope everyone took a moment to reflect on today and those we lost 64 years ago. May they never be forgotten. I also have the sad duty of changing someone's entry in the Muster Bar to deceased. I have been notified by Mathew Ables' sister that he passed away in 2001. Mathew served with VAQ-136 in IM-3 from 1984 to 1985.
Today's updates include new VAW-115 photos from Bernie Burawski and several new photos from Gary Schreffler. Gary's submissions also include some great photos from Midshipman Donald P. Rouland. Donald did his 5 week midshipman tour on the Midway in August 1958.

Summary:
Today's update is more of Gary's 8x10 collection and photos from a HS-12 rescue in 1990. A Motor Whale Boat was being lowered and fell dumping the five sailors aboard over the side. HS-12 rescued three and the plane guard Destroyer got the other two.

Summary:
Great day of uploads! In addition to more of Gary Schreffler's 8x10 photo collection I received a lot of other great material. Steve Newbauer used to ride on tin cans following the Midway around in the mid-70's. Steve sent in photos of the Midway pierside at Yoko as he was pulling in and at sea during ops. Robert Anderson sent in a ton of great photos of the current happenings at the Restoration Hangar. Lastly, Charlie Beggy forwarded a few pages of a 1948 edition of the ship's newsletter "The Midway Current" he received from Tom Herbert. There is a photo of Tom on page three.

I received a e-mail from John Carmichael about his recent trip to the Midway. John has a new album of photos from that trip on his website Carmichael's Position and he's given me permission to post them and his photos from grand opening week on CV41.ORG. John is the son of former VA-115 and USS Midway Commanding Officer Rear Admiral Hoagy Carmichael.

Summary:
Gary Schreffler sent in 2 video clips of the Midway and an early 1950's photo of the Midway with the USS Randolph. Robert Anderson sent in a lot of great photos of the freshly painted F-8K Crusader in VF-111 colors that should go aboard sometime in December. Robert also sent in a lot of photos of the newly acquired EKA-3B Sky Warrior. Jerry Warner sent in a cool looking W Division patch and I added a couple of CVG/W-2 patches that Kelly McManus grabbed for me during his recent trip to Japan. Thanks Kelly! John Mechelke e-mailed me a Navy NewsStand story and photo of USS Reagan CO Captain Symonds launching a F/A-18 Super Hornet from VFA-115 Eagles. Capt. Symonds was once an Eagle aboard the Midway. Finally, I have some new photos in the VA VMA Ready Room 3 gallery courtesy of Bill Gilchrist and new donors listed on the RR3 page.

Summary:
I've set up a page for the VA/VMA Light Attack group that is sponsoring Ready Room Three. There is a new banner on the front page for the page and I encourage other webmasters to please host the banner in support of their effort. While building the Ready Room Three page I found a lot of bad links on my Ready Room Five page... D'oh! I fixed those while I was at it and also added some recent photos of RR5 taken by R. Gary Schreffler sent in some video clips from a goldmine of 8mm film he bought at a garage sale! Included is a clip of a VF-24 F3H Demon cat shot, Operation Sandy V-2 launch, and landing footage taken from the cockpit when Midway was still a straightdeck carrier. I also uploaded 4 more photos from Randall Ray's Mt Fuji climb and a new "Where Are They Now?" photo if Monte Bringle at a Civil War reenactment. Thanks!

Summary:
Lots of great updates for today. I received a lot of excellent photos from two shipmates that were aboard in the '70's. Randall Ray was a BT assigned to 3B Fireroom 1977-79 and Kevin "Davey" Crockett was in VA-115 for the 1974 cruise. There are also some nice to the Pubs Library from Troy Prince and Tamas Szorad of the Hungarian magazine "Aeromagazin" sent me scans of the KA-6D article he wrote that included one of my VA-115 photos. Now I just need to learn Hungarian. ;)

Summary:
Gary Schreffler sent in four new PLAT videos. One is a late A-7 wave off due to a late retraction of the AG wire. He's lucky he didn't catch that wire. Another is a VF-161 F-4 that bounces a trap during sunset. The last two are remakes of the A-7 and F-4 ramp strikes, but include audio. Note these two also have rather large watermarks on them. Gary is working on a DVD compilation of PLAT videos, as well as other Midway and NAVAIR projects. The DVD videos will only have small watermarks in a corner out of the way. I'll announce sales information here when Gary is ready to go live with the discs.

Message of Condolences to the Massey Family
I would like to extend my heartfelt condolences to the Massey family on the passing of USS Midway shipmate Charles "Skip" Massey. Skip passed away last Sunday. He served aboard the Midway in 1964 assigned to Supply Department's S-3 Division. He was a recent friend of mine, but made me feel like I had known him forever. He was a true Midway shipmate that loved the ship and was able to visit the ship last April. Skip's wife requests that any contributions in his name go to the San Diego Aircraft Carrier Museum.

I uploaded a scan of a 1962 Midway print I won on ebay. It was almost destroyed in the mail and took a lot of work with Photoshop to restore so you better look at it! ;) I also received three newspaper clippings from Ike Newkerk of when Midway stopped at Freemantle in September 1989. Also from Ike is the Midway's special 44th Birthday newsletter, Flagship Flyer and scans of a card from a dependence day cruise.
Kelly McManus sent in the Five more issues of the Midway News from the Gulf War. February 14-18, 1991. Great stuff including an article on the oldest Airman on Midway.

Summary:
I was able to contact several Midway veterans that were aboard in 1954 and knew of the SNJ "Jaybird" 921 that ditched on March 8, 1954. Aircraft 921 was one of two SNJs that pilots assigned to Ship's Comapany used to stay proficient (and collect flight pay). That day 921 had a crew of two, the pilot Lt Joe Podner and AT3 Joe Sinkking. Both were rescued by helo. The aircaft ditched due to loss of engine power and it was believed to have been caused by carb ice. I'd like to thank Ken Sullivan, Jack Kirwan, Harold Wenhold, Len Lichter, and especially Cdr Bob Allwine. Bob was an AD2 at the time and assigned to the SNJ maintenance crew from 1952 to 1954. Bob worked on 921 and still chats with Joe Sinkking. Bob even sent me photos of 921 a year before the ditching and one of the maintenance crew at the Cannes airfield. In addition to Bob's photos I got one more photo from Philippe of the engine plate off of 921.

Summary:
Philippe Castellano found an old French newspaper article about the Midway SNJ that ditched on March 8, 1954. The pilot was Lt. Portner and was rescued by a Midway helo. The SNJ was operating out of the Saint-Cassien airfield while Midway was anchored off the coast of Cannes. Ditching was due to engine problems. If any of you 54 Med Cruise shipmates remember this incident please e-mail me. I've also uploaded a photo of the Midway probably taken in the late 1940's. Date and location unknown and a 1991 USS Midway Information Kit. It was produced sometime between Operation Fiery Vigil and Decommissioning.

Uploaded a cool new photo to "Where Are They Now?" of LCDR Shawn Whalen, now the Handling Officer on the USS Lincoln. Kelly McManus sent in the Fall 1989 Midway Magicgram and a shipmate photo from 1990. I've spliced together the fronts and backs of 11 Desert Storm bomb leaflets courtesy of Gary Schreffler. Philippe Castellano sent in another photo of the possible USS Midway SNJ Texan that was lost off the coast of France during the 1954 Med Cruise. I've confirmed that SNJs were used on carriers as utility aircraft during that time period. If anyone reading was aboard for that cruise and has information regarding this aircraft and it's loss please e-mail me. Philippe, SDACM, and I would really appreciate hearing what you know.

Summary:
Lots of catching up to do! I've uploaded a few more photos of the Soviet Foxtrot sub that's now a display item in San Diego. It's gotta be the closest a Soviet sub has ever gotten to the Midway. Jim Houchin sent in a ton of new stuff. I've only made a small dent in it by uploading some Liberty photos and pics of escort ships. Gary Schreffler sent in a new video of a F4U takeoff mishap and a scan of his blood chit from the Gulf War. I also received a lot of bomb leaflets of the gulf War from Gary. These will uploaded soon. Lastly, I recieved some photos and a request for information from a French scuba diver, Phillippe Castellano. Philippe and a team of divers has discovered the wreckage of a SNJ off the coast of Cannes. Records indicate it may have crashed in March 1954 and was stricken by CVA-41 USS Midway. Does anyone have information about this?

Summary:
Great contributions came in over the weekend from Jim Houchin, Jeanette Olivera, and Gary Schreffler. Jim sent in a lot of new photos from his late '70's tour. Jeanette is a Midway volunteer and sent in photos of the three new aircraft that were loaded aboard last week as well as some photos of L-5, the new Pier-to-Flight Deck elevator. Gary sent in another great PLAT video of a Rockriver F-4 trapping aboard with tanker's refueling basket still attached to it's IFR probe. D'oh!!!

Summary:
Over the past couple of days I have added 56 more screen caps from the webcam of the F/A-18 and RA-5. I haven't seen the A-4 since it came aboard and suspect it's down in the hangar bay. Fourty-eight of the screen caps are courtesy of Troy Prince. I also recieved some great photos from Harry Ford's 1954 Med Cruise tour courtesy of his daughter Ruby.

Summary:
Major aircraft move on the ship today. The A-4E that was aboard was offloaded after the new A-4 was loaded. Then the F/A-18 Hornet and RA-5 Vigilante were loaded aboard. I got web cam shots of the A-4 swap and I just got off the phone with Troy at MidwaySailor.com and he got the F/A-18 and RA-5 move. Together it looks like we captured the entire event! I uploaded the pics I have and will get Troy's up tomorrow. The picture's file name is the time on the west coast that the cam image was captured.

1,000,000 Visitors to Midway!
Nearly a year ahead of projections, Midway welcome reached the million-visitor mark on July 18, 2005. In just 13 months since opening, Midway has become the most-visited of more than 100 historical naval ship museums in the continental U.S. The Goble family visiting from Peoria, AZ were the big winners. They received an autographed copy of Midway Magic and a behind-the-scenes tour by author Scott McGaugh. Complimentary flight simulations, lunch, a family museum membership and a $500 shopping spree in the gift shop rounded out the special package presented to the Gobles.

Summary:
Today's update includes contributions from Ron French, Max Kidd, and Midway's Aircraft volunteers Frank Warren, Aubrey Brittian, Jim Compagnon, and Al Schlegel. Ron sent in three newspaper articles circa 1965. The Life magazine article is as relevant today as it was back in '65. Max Kidd sent in a cool photo from vetfriends.com of two VMFP-3 shipmates that happened to meet on the Midway by coincidence. They hadn't seen each other since 1976! Finally, I've uploaded the lastest photos of projects over at Midway's Aircraft restoration hangar including photos of an EKA-3B Skywarrior still in storage at Tuscon and their award winning entry in Coronado's 4th of July parade.

Summary:
Today's update includes contributions from John Mechelke, Bruce Dolan, and Troy Prince. John sent in a ton of scans of his patch collection including many I've never seen before. He also submitted some great Liberty Call photos, various escort ships, shipmate photos, a newspaper article, and a scan of his wog summons. Bruce sent in a beautiful VA-93 Raven group shot flying over NAS Cubi Pt and Bravo Zulu VA-93 newspaper article. Troy sent over some of his latest ebay winnings. Three great Midway photos from the 50's, 70's, and 90's. Future updates will include more photos from Eddie Miller's collection from the mid-late 80's, J.P. Hale's revamped 1950's collection, and updated photos from the Restoration Hangar.
I have also added a banner on the front page to a website dedicated to Capt. Scott "Spike" Speicher. Please check it out if you get a chance. I can't think of a reason why we have not solved the mystery of his disappearance.

Today's update includes new photos from Paul Jarvis from inport in Yoko to helo flight ops and ports of call. John Mscisz sent in two new photos from the 1972 combat cruise and I added a photo to the VF-161 album from my collection. Summary:
Ike Newkerk sent in a newspaper article from the NAF Atsugi "Skywriter" paper on the disestablishment of VA-185 and three airplan cartoons from the '83 NORPAC cruise. Gary Schreffler has added another video to his collection of a A-3 Skywarrior breaking an arresting gear cable while trapping. Several crewman where struck by the cable, but amazingly there were just minor injuries. The A-3 was lost, but the crew was recovered safely. Though the incident to not take place on the Midway it shows just how fast something unexpectedly can happen on the roof. Gary also sent in photos of the Khawar Al Amaya oil terminal combat rescue. Details are in the captions! In addition there are a couple of photos of Iragi uses for oil. John Mechelke forwared a photo of the Swedish sub HMS Gotland passing the Midway as it arrived in San Diego on 27 June 2005. Finally, Bill Purcell sent in a photo a new plaque aboard the ship thanking Pete Clayton, Terry Erickson, Vic Zambrano, and Ernesto Zambrano for their hard work and dedication in delivery and preparation of the USS Midway. Summary:
Updated the Memoriam program for Lawrence Winston Morris to include the page with his photo. After thinking it over I believe he would like it there for us to remember him by. I added a new Memoriam program for Joe Pfleghaar courtesy of squadron mate Gary Schreffler. Also from Gary are some beautiful photos he took of a Soviet Battle Group from a HS-12 Speargun. In addition to the Battle Group there are great photos of a SU-15 Flagon and Hormone helo sent out to keep an eye on the Speargun. Gary's updates continue with Steelbeach Picnic, Wog Day, and Fiery Vigil Part 2 photos! I finish out Ike Newkerk's latest photos with great pics of Flight Ops, UNREP, Corregidor, a Soviet Badger, and a pic taken by a VA-185 Knighthawk of the USS Nimitz flight deck. VA-185 was tasked with finding and attacking Nimitz as she left Hong Kong. The photo is to represent the last thing a Harpoon missile would have seen before impacting the Nimitz. :) Finally there is a new 300 trap Centurion patch courtesy of Troy Prince.

Summary:
Today's update includes some more great photos from Ike Newkerk and Gary Schreffler. Ike's photos are of the Philippine island, Corregidor. If you are unfamilar with Corregidor to please take some time to read about it's history. Gary's photos include plenty of pics of the ship from the HS-12 plane guard vantage point. Today's update includes some great photos from Ken Weiss of VF-151 (1975-76) and more new photos from Ike Newkerk including a FOD walkdown photo. What were you doing shooting pictures instead of FOD walkdown Ike? ;) Gary Schreffler stuffed the e-mail box over the weekend and I will be uploading his photos throughout the week Today there are some photos of Gary and shipmates as well as a great photo sequeunce of a "small boy" passing in review shortly after the end of Desert Storm. This group of pictures is pretty cool, and was really cool when it happened. Just after Desert Storm, the Air Boss announces that several 'small boys' were coming up the starboard side of the ship to pay us respect for a job well done. Luckily, I had just landed and was on the flight deck with trusty camera on hand. - Gary

Summary:
Uploaded the last two videos I have on hand from Gary. One is a A-3 bolter that ends up ditching. It's believed to be VAH-8 crash. The other is a VF-161 F-4 night ramp strike. I was in the VA-115 line shack just below the flight deck when it happened. The RIO ejected just as the aircraft hit and the pilot, Ltjg Martone was lost with the aircraft. We were all watching the approach on the PLAT video since we knew the aircraft was NORDO (no radio). I thought our AT troubleshooter was lost on that one. I've also uploaded a new photo to Ike Newkerk's "Where Are They Now? and and Gary Schreffler's 1980's album.

Summary:
There are three more photos from Ike Newkerk online. It's an all F-4 day from Ike. Bill Purcell sent in some photos taken by SDACM volunteer Jeanette Olivera of the Volunteer night at Petco Stadium last night. Looks like a good time was had by all. There is another new video from Gary Schreffler loaded. This time it's some video shot from a HS-12 Helo on Plane Guard duty of an A-6 trapping aboard. It's pretty bouncy so, it gives you an idea what it was like riding around in those egg-beaters ;)

Summary:
I had meant to come back here yesterday and post a Happy Anniversary message for the San Diego Aircraft Carrier museum. A busy work schedule nixed that, but there are several Happy Anniversary messages over on the forum. Check em out and check out the museum if you can! Maybe you'll be the 1,000,000,000th lucky visitor! That mark has to be coming up soon. It's hard to believe a year has gone by. In that time the number of display aircraft has tripled with three more going aboard very soon. Many more compartments have been opened for display and I suspect some Ready Rooms will be opening up this summer. The Midway has proven naysayers wrong and thoroughly exceeded expections of her supporters. Here is to many more years of "Magic"!
Today's update includes progress photos of several of the Midway's aircraft currently under restoration and the new acquisition... a F8U Crusader! Photos are courtesy of the MidwaysAircraft.org website. I've also uploaded more photos from Ike Newkerk including some of a CVW-5 Air Sho... er, I mean, Show of Strength Exercise. ;). Finally, there is on new video from Gary Schreffler in the video files section. I happened to be between the cats when this accident occurred. It involves a VF-161 Phantom that had a bridle hook break during the cat shot. It's believed the F-4 could have maded it had debris from the cat not FOD'd the engines. LCDR Murphy of VF-161 did not survive the ejection. I did not know Mr. Murphy personally, but I remember seeing him on deck a lot and he was always friendly. This accident was hard on all of us that worked on the roof.

Summary:

Photos include a HS-12 helo checking out a Soviet Foxtrot sub and pics of the HS-12 helo that crashed during operation Fiery Vigil being returned to the Midway. Today's videos are of the A-3 Whale and VF-151 CAG bird that collapsed stbd MLG in NORPAC. Troy Prince concludes the Midway band photos from the 50's with three new pics.

Summary:
Today's update includes a photo of the Midway after the 1957 recommissioning and an updated photo of the VAH-8 Skywarrior mishap that occured on 24 September 1962. I have also started uploading Gary Schreffler's PLAT video collection. Some of the videos are graphic and tragic, but they are presented here to pay tribute to those of us that didn't make it home. They also show that what we did, and what the young men and women do today is anything but routine.

Summary:
I hope everyone had a great Memorial Day weekend! Just a couple of updates for today. Gary Schreffler sent in one of the oddests pics you're ever going to see. Gary was in HS-12 as a aircrew / rescue swimmer from 1984 to 1992. While on patrol in a HS-12 helo Gary and the crew found a Manta Ray near the surface that was large enough to land the helo on! They took an Intel photo of it. I'm unsure if it's a friend or foe, so I put in it Gary's photo album. ;) I also received the first set of photos from Bill Purcell of the Memorial Day service on the Midway. Bill says there are more on the way. :)

Uploaded an article from the December 2002 issue of Approach magazine written by Gary Schreffler. Gary wrote about the night he ditched in HS-12's "Speargun 610" on 12 February 1986. This story will make the hair on the back of your neck stand up!

Summary:
Great stuff spanning the 50's to 2003! Troy Prince sent in another '50's pic of the Midway band this time playing in the Tokyo Tower on 22 December 1958. Max Kidd sent in some great pics of his 1977-79 tour in Crash & Salvage. Max also sent in some cards for the Memorabilia album and a 1977 Wog Day pic. Rick Patterson sent in a cool photo he took of the Midway passing under the Oakland-San Francisco Bay Bridge on New Year's Eve 2003 on her way to San Diego.

Summary:
Chet Morris sent in some great current photos for his "Where Are They Now?" album. John Manderson sent in a nice panoramic merge of two photos he took of the Island when the ship was at Oakland for the new paint job. There's two new scans from Troy Prince. One is a cool 1950's photo of the Midway's Flag Band performing on the flight deck during a Captain's Inspection. The other is an excellent art print by A. Itabashi that appeared in the 1990 & 91 Atsugi Airshow program.

I want to thank everyone for all of the e-mails concerning Earl. They make two things clear, 1) There's a lot of pet lovers out there and, 2) People actually read this page! ;)
The Forum is going to be down for a couple of hours today starting *real soon*. It's to facilitate some much needed maintenance and cleaning of the database. When it comes back up it's going to be on the bressler.org domain and not the bushwhacked.net. The links on my site to the forum will be broken. It will take awhile to get all of them fixed, but I'll announce the new address here as soon as the system in back up. Also, some of the hacks may not come through the upgrade, so if things don't seem the same, that's why.

Summary:
I apologize for taking so long to upload an update. I took break when my dog, Earl became ill and I eventually had to have him put to sleep. Earl was my best friend for 14 years and a damn fine co-pilot. Anyone interested in checking Earl out please click HERE.
Now for the update. Harry Grajewski, a starboard cat operator in 1951-52 sent in some great photos from his tour. Bill Purcell sent in scans of the new audio tour pamplet that includes a new "Express Tour". Fellow VA-115 squadronmate Hank Vyrostek sent in a couple of photos for the "Where Are They Now?" gallery. Troy Prince sent along two new Air Wing patches and a sweet VF-161 zap. Troy also has new photos on his site of yet another new elevator. This one dubbed El #5 is from the pier to the top of a sponson walkway. I have captured a couple of quick webcam shots of it. Lastly, there are two more partial issues of All Hands with Midway related articles in the Pubs Library.

Summary:
Charles "Chaz" Kohler sent in 4 photos from the 1950 Med Cruise and 1 photo of a F7U taken in the Caribbean. Chaz was an ABE2 on the cat crew from 1950 to 1953. I've added a link to Skip Massey's "Where Are They Now?" photo that takes you to a morph slide presentation that Skip made using a free program called "Memories". Pretty cool! Also uploaded three articles from the June 1946 issue of "All Hands".

If you are interested in T-shirts, Mugs, etc you have to check out Troy's new MidwaySailor Store at CafePress! I'm going to twist his arm to include some older squadrons. ;) I received some great new stuff from Rick Patterson. Rick sent in a Midway article from the Fall 1984 issue of The Hook, some photos from the 1982 Wog Day, and a PI party photo for IM-2. I worked on videos from Rick Edwards and Bill Lowers over the weekend. I have more from them to upload this week. I uploaded cover scans from two Midway related books, "Midway Magic" and "No Easy Days". Scott McGaugh's "Midway Magic" is available at the Jet Shop and is a must have book. "No Easy Days" has photos of several Midway accidents including the collision with the Cactus, Lt. Keagan's F9F crash, the 1984 A-7 ramp strike and more. You'll have to poke around the web to find a copy. Amazon is a good place to start. Keep checking this page for some exciting news on a new Midway book coming real soon! ;) Paul Jarvis got the Desert Storm bombing leaflets translated from his Air Force bud Kamal Masri. Summary:
I created a banner on the front page for the F-8 Crusader Association's Ready Room 7 campaign. Those of you who are ex-Crusaders should check it out! Bill Lowers sent me a CD of photos and videos of his recent visit to the ship. Bill's photos are up and I'll be working on the videos shortly. Troy Prince scanned a Golden Dragon certificate signed by Tommy Blackurn that I ran through Photoshop. It still needs some more work, but it's up in the Pubs Library. Last, I've uploaded two photos of a HS-12 crash while attempting to land on Spot 3 courtesy of Pete Clayton.

Summary:
Trying to get caught up on some backlogged material. Today's update includes 5 post cards scans, 4 of which came from Paul Jarvis. Paul also sent in a couple of photos of the USS Greyback taken from the flight deck while the ship was at the Philippines. There are scans from three issues of Koku Fan. The November 84 issue has an interesting photo of a VF-151 Phantom flyby trailing the brake chute. There is a nice USN photo of VF-161's "triple sticks" in the VF-161 / Misc album and two new patches, VF-21 and VA-56. I also added a link to William Mattingly's photos on Jojo Vicencio's website.

Summary:
Still trying to get back into the swing of things. Amazing what a week away from civilization will do to you. I received some great submissions while I was away. Rick Edwards sent in scans of the 1970 Commissioning Program and invitation. That completes the Midway's Commissioning program list. Rick also sent in six minutes of flight ops video. I will get that converted and online as soon as I can. Paul Jarvis sent in quite a few new photos. I'm holding out hopes that he has another photo album somewhere that he hasn't found yet. ;) Skip Massey visited the USS Hornet and found a Midway photo there that he shot a copy of and sent in.

Added two newspaper articles courtesy of Skip Massey. One article talks about the blisters and the other about Midway's departure from Japan. Skip also sent a video cap of an A-4 with a busted tail from a landing incident. Photo took place while the ship was at Pearl Harbor. Summary: Skip sent in some items from his 1963-64 tour including the "Welcome Aboard" pamplet from that period. VA-115 shipmate, Danny "Whimpy" Kirkendall sent two photos from his 1971-74 tour. One photo shows some damage on an A-6 from a SAM and the other is a Ordie group shot celebrating 2,000,000 pounds loaded. Shit Hot! I also got caught up with some official USN photo uploads.

Summary: Two new postcard scans were uploaded. One is courtesy of Bill Purcell who sent it to my daughter. I believe the last of the missing albums were restored this morning with the exception of JP Hale. I'm still working on reorganizing his photos. Summary: I received many great submissions from Rick Patterson over the weekend. There are patches, two NORPAC newspaper articles, the March 1980 issue of Naval Aviation News that includes photos of the Midway on the front and back cover as well as VA-56 featured in the Squadron Insignia column. Rick also sent excerpts from three editions of the Midway Multiplex. I also received two patch scans from Cheryl Blevins and one new photo of her brother Terry McIntosh.

Summary: Two new videos today. Both are PLAT video of A-7s. In one a VA-56 Champ collapses it's stbd main gear on a hard landing in NORPAC. I was one of the first two people to the plane when it stopped. The other was VA-56's FDC. We looked at each other, looked at the pilot and he looked back and just shrugged his shoulders. What a hoot. The second video captures a VA-93 Raven shredding a tire on touchdown. There is also a great Atsugi Air Show Program featuring CVW-5 in the Pubs Library courtesy of Ike Newkerk. Troy Prince contibuted a very nice B&W photo of Midway from 1945. Also in the Pubs Library is another All Hands article about the Midway in Operation Frostbite. It looks like the new elvator is installed now just aft of El 2. I've uploaded one web cam shot.
Other Changes - I've added photos from existing albums to Operations! / Yankee Station and Operation Mainbrace. I also fixed the photo gallery links from the Air Wing pages.

Summary: I uploaded another new video. This one is the PLAT video of the VMFP-3 RF-4B Phantom that took the barricade in Jan 1984. You can read about it in this issue of the Approach. I was under the wing of the A-3 Whale during this landing with a firehose nozzle in my hand. Got to watch the whole thing. Talk about a rush! There are also still photos of the event HERE.
The 15th Midway Cruise book, 1976 "Taking Care of Business" on CDROM is released! Currently in work is the 1985-87 "The Magic Touch" cruise book.

Summary: I've uploaded a video of the USS Enterprise Tomcats that trapped and cat'd on the Midway during the Fall 1982 NORPAC. You can read about it in this issue of the Midway Multiplex. It's interesting to note that the Tomcats launched without AB and with the JBDs down because they were too close to the back of the F-14s. There are also still shots of the TomKitties HERE. I fixed the title screen for Rick Edwards' A-5 CQ video. Also, the "Midway's Aircraft" album has updated photos courtesy of John Njaa, David Roy, Frank Warren, and Tony Herlevic.
I'm no longer going to change the date on the "What's New" menu item on the main page.

Summary: I "think" all but two or three albums are restored. I have a couple that I want to optimize and reorganize. I have a lot of new photos from Kelly McManus from his tour during the Gulf War. Troy Prince sent over much better copies of two photos I have, one in Operations / Sayanora and another in VF-161 / Misc. I've uploaded a couple of new photos to Terry McIntosh's album from his sister Cheryl. Chuck Cavanaugh sent me two Midway escort ship logos that he's redrawn.

Summary: I'm very close to finishing up the remaining album restores. Just a handful of Liberty Call and SDACM albums remain. There are still a lot of captions missing, but I'll continue to work on that. There are a few new items to check out. I've created an album for Terry McIntosh courtesy of his sister Cheryl. Terry was a FN and died aboard the ship on May 8, 1974. If anyone has information regarding Terry's death or wish to communicate with Cheryl please check out the The Midway Forum. I've also uploaded a newspaper article Cheryl forwarded to me about Lt John Lindahl's plane crash off the coast of Viet Nam. Skip Massey also sent me a scan of some early 60's Memoriabilia items.

Summary:
Gallery problem solved!!!!
Yesterday I was uploading and probably had the gallery back to 75% when the problems kicked in again. LOOOOOONG story short, on March, 2 the server provider upgraded PHP on the server, but did not modify the default settings for memory_limit and max_execution_time. A quick call to the server provider and now everything is working great. There never was any corruption in the first place. I was able to get nearly all of the Pubs Library restored before the problems started yesterday. All that is left to restore is about half of the San Diego Aircraft Carrier Museum - Navy Pier gallery and all of Liberty Call. I really want to thank everyone for your patience while I worked though this difficult problem. If all continues to go well I'll have everything back up in a few days.

Summary:
I'm making good progress in restoring the gallery. Yesterday I restored nearly all of the "Operations!" gallery. Today I uploaded "Midway's Hangar" and "Road to San Diego" in the San Diego Aircraft Carrier Museum gallery. I also got most of "Pamplets, Books, & Booklets" done in the Pubs Libray.
I managed to upload a few new things as well. Check out Bill Lower's album in SDACM / Navy Pier. Bill was out visiting earlier this month and has sent me some sneak preview photos. He's got more coming to me soon!
I also uploaded a 360 pan video from the bow that Bill made during his trip.

Summary:
One step forward... five steps back. I had to restore the photo gallery all the way back to the 15th when it became so corrupted this morning that it was unusable. I think I know what caused the problem. Hopefully I can avoid it from here on out. Anyways, back to the uploads.
I want to start by uploading some new stuff though! Check out Skip Massey's album in Midway Through the Years / 1960's.
I also uploaded a Flight Ops video Skip made from 1964. Cool stuff!!!

Summary: I am nearly finished with restoring the photo galleries. All that remains is the San Diego - Navy Pier album and it's pretty big. I am going to take the time over the weekend to reorganize these photos and put them back up in a more organized fashion. I did hit a major bug today and it's made me reconsider keeping Gallery as my preferred means of displaying photos.
I was able to restore most of the photo captions during the photo reloads. I will go back later and get the one's I've missed.
If I make a mistake with credits for any item please drop me an E-mail.

Summary: I found out last Friday that the server wasn't getting backed up. Since that is no longer an option I have pushed ahead with the new gallery and began uploading to it Friday. As of now I have most of "Midway Through the Years" uploaded and have started with the Air Wings. My hope is to have 90% restored by the end of the week. To speed up the process I am restoring very limited captions for the photos. I'll go back and try to get them restored after the photos are back up. Right now I feel it is more important to have the photos and publications online. If I make a mistake with credits for any item please drop me an E-mail.

Summary: Since I do not have a restore of the photo gallery and cannot get a firm ETA I have opened up the new gallery for viewing. This gallery isn't anywhere close to complete as you will see. It may literally take weeks to get everything reloaded. If or when I get the original gallery restored I will switch back over to it until the new gallery is completed. I'd like to thank everyone for their patience during this outtage. Several lessons have been learned and steps have been taken so this kind of interuption never happens again. I'd like to ask people to e-mail me any corrections for photo descriptions and credits they see. I'm bound to make a few mistakes due to the quantity of photos we're dealing with here.

Summary: The photo gallery is still offline. My service provider gave me a date of 11 March for a restore. I have continued troubleshooting, but nothing has worked so far. I have also brought up a test gallery using the next version of the software. This is so I can figure out the new setup and also to use it as a backup plan in case I have to upload all of the photos and scans again. This of course is not the desired solution. With over 9,000 images in the old gallery it would take a considerable amount of time to upload it all over again. I am going to start uploading photos to the new gallery today just in case and I will switch it on tomorrow whether it's full or not if, A) the restore does not work or B) the service provider hasn't performed the restore. Thanks for your patience!

Summary: The photo gallery has been down since around 5:00PM Thursday, 3/3/05. I have tried fixing it including upgrading to the next version and nothing has helped. I've requested a restore from Wednesday, 3/2/05 and will hopefully have the system back up soon. The time estimate was not encouraging though. None of the images are lost. It is the program itself that appears to be corrupted. Thanks for your patience in getting this resolved.
In the news, it looks like the USS America will be sent 6,000' to the bottom of the Atlantic after being used for target practice. The idea is to see how a carrier stands up to the latest weapons. This is on the heals of news that the USS Kennedy will more than likely be retired this year, much earlier than planned. With the JFK mothballed the only conventional carrier left will be the Kitty Hawk.

Summary: Uploaded scans from the July 1972 Koku-Fan. It is an A-6 Intruder issue and has several VA-115 photos including one with a AH tailcode. This was taken when Midway's air wing was CVW-16, prior to the 1971 combat cruise. Paul Jarvis is added to the "Where Are They Now?" album. What did that duck ever do to you Paul? ;)

Summary: I fixed a bug in the semaphore flag link. Clicking on the flag opened the linked photo in the left panel instead of the right. Thanks to Bruce Rose for pointing it out to me. I created a new Post Cards album in the Memoribilia gallery and uploaded a new post I got and a much improved copy of the "Merry Christmas" card courtesy of Troy Prince. Troy also sent a scan of a VA-115 painting by Lou Drendel that's been uploaded to VA-115 / Misc. I've also uploaded scans from another Koku-Fan. This one includes a nice color photo of a VA-93 A-7E with FLIR pod.

Summary: After a long hiatus Bill Purcell managed to drag himself to the ship to take photos of new exhibits including Medical and the new Midway Phantom in VF-21 / 161 colors. Summary: I've been fighting the flu lately which explains the lack of updates. I've added a photo radomizer to the front page so now when you open CV41.ORG or refresh you'll get a new photo image. So, if you bring up the site and don't like the photo you see just hit refresh until you get one you do like! Currently there are 23 ranndom images. I'll be increasing that a lot soon. I've uploaded photos from two more issues of Koku-Fan and also a photo of the Midway circa 1987-89.

Summary: Troy Prince of MidwaySailor.com has discovered a new MiG kill credited to Midway and VF-21. Read about it in the book scans from "US Navy F-4 Phantom MiG Killers 1965-70" he sent me. Bill Purcell sent me the newspaper article from the Feb, 13 issue of the San Diego Tribune. I also organized the newspaper articles a little better. Robert Anderson was aboard recently and took new photos of the VF-21 / VF-161 Phantom, S-3B Viking, SH-3G Sea King, SH-2F Sea Sprite, Pri-Fly, and new stairway near EL One leading to the hangar bay. I also uploaded scans from a double deck of CVB-41 playing cards to memoribilia.

Summary: I've uploaded the cover and two photos from the November 1951 issue of Flying!. It's a special Naval Aviation issue with a lot of neat articles. Though none of the articles are about the Midway I will add some of them later just because they're pretty cool to read. I'll include the photos of Midway's sister ships as well. If you didn't notice I also replaced the front page photo and trimmed the left menu down. I will "try" to cycle a new front page every day. We'll see how it goes.

Summary: Starting today I will be adding a short summary of the updates. Today's updates include some great VERTREP photos from Eddie Miller. Eddie was in V-1 "Smash & Crash" from 1987-89. Also from Eddie are some new CVW-5 photos and some USO show photos of Bob Hope, Connie Stevens, Barbara Eden, Lee Greenwood, and Miss America. Ike Newkerk sent in a new beer label I used to see a lot, a photo of VF-161's AME & PR shop hatch art, and a cool Navy Times squadron highlight of VF-161. Chuck Cavanaugh, Midway photag from 1980-82 sent in a cool panoramic view of the newly opened Midway focsle. Thanks guys!
