- I hope everyone had an enjoyable Thanksgiving holiday with friends and family. Here is hoping everyone has a safe and enjoyable holiday season in December. I recieved some great updates from Rick Edwards, Ike Newkerk, Bill Purcell, Gary Schreffler, Troy Prince, Jerry Boysell, and Mads Bangsř. Rick and Bill made recent trips to the museum and each took some fantastic photos of many of the new displays and open spaces. Ike sent me some vintage photos from the 70's and PI. Gary sent in a rare 1959 Welcome Aboard pamphlet and ship photo from '80's. Troy sent me some really cool satelitte photos from Live Search. Jerry sent in more great photos of the V-3 gang from the late 1950's. Mads sent in several new prints of CVW-5 he has done that look fantastic! Goto www.aircraftprofiles.dk for ordering information. - New submissions from Jerry Boysell, Kelly McManus, Ike Newkerk, Troy Prince, and a few items I've collected. Jerry sent in more photos from his days in V-3 back in the 50's and from recent AG reunions. I have also reorganized his photos into seperate albums for old and new material. Kelly sent me several newspaper articles from Midway's return to Yoko in '91. I also added a couple of newspaper items I've picked up lately. Ike sent in scans of a crad from Hong Kong and sent me a nice Battle Group photo taken in the 80's. Troy sent in a scan of a cool 1986 Tiger Cruise patch and the cover of a Naval Aviation News featuring the Midway. I also added a print of Battle Group Alfa from the '83 NORPAC

- Getting caught up.... New submissions from Jerry Boysell, Michael Manley, Michael Angulo, Gary Schreffler, and a few items I've collected. Jerry has sent is many photos from his days in V-3 back in the 50's and from recent AG reunions. Michael Manley scanned many more of his great slides from his tour in the 80's including Liberty photos from PI, Hong Kong, and Japan. Michael Angulo sent in more great photos he took from a recent tour of the ship. Gary managed to get some outstanding photos of the ship during construction. He also sent in a scan of his slimy wog summons. I uploaded scans of several pamphlets including the 1965 VA-23 Change of Command, Midway Dependant's Day cruise 1983, and a partial Visitor's Cruise 1982. I also uploaded a USN photo of some T-6's flying over the ship recently and a scan of an old medical department patch.

- New today....Submissions from John Mscicz, Tamas Szorad, Gary Schreffler, Dav!d Berg, Dennis Murphy, Michael Angulo, and Jerry Boysell. John sent in updated (better resolution) photos from his 1972 Vietnam combat cruise. Tamas sent me scans of an article he wrote for the Hungarian magazine Aeromagazin about my life as a troubleshooter. Gary sent a photo of him standing next to his helo circa early 1990's. Dav!d submitted photos of ships around San Diego. Dennis sent me two neat photos of him and then Secretary of the Navy John Lehman in Engine Room #3. Michael sent a few nice photos of the ship from a recent visit. Jerry submitted some more photos of AG gang at recent reunions. I also uploaded a couple of official USN photos I've found on the web.

- New today....Submissions from Gary Schreffler, Paul Crutcher, Dav!d Berg, Paul Jarvis, Walter Jones, and Kevin "Davey" Crockett. Gary sent in a couple of shipmate photos as well as 20 photos from the Cyril Michel estate which I had acquired some earlier. Paul Crutcher sent in wreckage photos of one of VMFP-3's Bicentinneal aircraft, 153098 that crashed near Parker, AZ on October 22, 1975. Dav!d sent in some new photos of ships around San Diego including one of a SEAL Fast Attack Boat. Paul Jarvis sent me the May 1992 issue of Sea Classics with a great Farewell to Midway article. Walter submitted information about a particular sign that used to be displayed on the island. Lastly, Kevin sent a photo of him for the "Where Are They Now?" showing that he is working waaaaaaaaaaaay too hard these days. ;).

- New today....Submissions from Gary Schreffler, Jerry Boysel, Donald Rouland, Dav!d Berg, and some stuff I've collected recently. Gary sent in a nice detailed scan of a 1947 USS Midway photo. Jerry sent in a photo of him from his 1957 V-2 Division days and a group shot from the 1957 V-2 Division reunion held last April. I uploaded several newspaper articles from 1958-59 from Donald. Dav!d sent in some really nice photos of ships around San Diego including some small craft used by the USN that are unknown. If anyone knows information on what they are please let me know. Stuff that I've collected include a 1949 article about the USS Midway in the JAX Air News, Ltjg Steve Martone's Memoriam program, a 1954 edition of the Midway Newsletter Early Tide, and a collection of 1980's photos that belonged to Cyril Michel.

New stuff from Gary Schreffler includes a 1954 video of a VF-33 Cougar trapping aboard Midway, a Helmsman certificate and a nice 1950's portrait. Also a new video clip from Gary Schreffler featuring a F8F Bearcat crashing during landing. The incident occured in 1948. The pilot survived and can be seen in his life raft.

- New today.... Several new albums of Dav!d Berg photos featuring US Navy vessels at San Diego. Four great 1950's photos from Troy Prince of the Midway. Gary Schreffler sent in a new Midway post card and an amature photo of the Midway taken during Navy Day 1945 at NYC. Bill Gilchrist of the VA / VMA Ready Room Three project sent in several new photos of the progress in the Ready Room. Their Ready Room Chair Endowment program continues to gather a lot of support. Last, I just acquired a copy of the 1974 "Movin' On" cruise book that belonged to RADM Speer. Included was a letter to the Admiral from Midway CO Capt Schulte and the 1975 Midway Change of Command pamplet. Both are scanned and in the Pubs Library.

- New today.... Gary Schreffler e-mailed a nice scan of a Freelancer F3H trapping aboard. Ike Newkerk sent in two nice liberty photos. One of Ike atop Mt Fuji and another of the floating restaurants at Aberdeen, HK. I never had a chance to eat there. :(

- New today.... As promised, I uploaded the April 1965 issue of the ship's newsletter "Midway West". Check out page 10. That's Buzz Trimnell manning the cat controls. I also added a new link to John Chesire's website. John was a pilot in VF-151 during the Vietnam War. His site is a biographical sketch of his time as a fighter pilot in the USN. Very interesting reading! Finally, Bill Gilchrist submitted recent photos of the chairs that have been sponsored through the USN/USMC Light Attack Ready Room 3 Restoration Fund.

- New today.... I scanned and uploaded a 1949 USMC recruitment pamplet titled, "Life At Sea". Featuring CVB-41 USS Midway the pamplet explains what life is like for a MARDET Marine attached to a carrier. I've also added better cover scans and a few pages to most of the cruise book albums in the Pubs Library.

- New today.... New photos from Paul Jarvis of V-4 division shipmates, Midway at Cubi Pt, Yoko and more. Hank Vyrostek sent in some photos from Paul Nordman when they were TAD to the Jet Shop. Includes a very cool photo of a J79 on the test stand at night. Gary Schreffler sent in an improved scan of Chester Zaremba's late 40's photo of the Midway. Lastly, I uploaded a scan of an old artist VTOL conception design in VF-161 colors.

- New today.... a copy of "Midway West" courtesy of Gary Schreffler. This is the last edition published aboard the ship prior to decomm and Fleet Rehabilitation and Modernization (FRAM) - late 1965. Also from Jeff Zaremba is the 31 January 1948 issue of "The Midway Current" courtesy of his father, Chester and two more pages of the 20 December 1947 issue.

- I've uploaded two great collections that just came in. Tom Boggs was a SM2 in CS division during the 1965 WESTPAC and he sent in some excellent photos from that cruise. Photo albums include Flight Ops, Subic and Cubi Pt, Flight Deck, UNREP, and Typhoon. The typhoon photos remind me of NORPAC. ;) Also sent in are some great photos of Operation Frequent Wind from Charlie Kemp. Charlie was a USAF aircrewman on one of the CH-53's. There is a cool photo of the flight deck taken from the cargo door of a CH-53 as well as some at sea personnel tranfser photos and three photos of Major Bung Ly landing his Bird Dog on the flight deck. There's also a couple of photos of the flight deck crew doing the "Huey Toss". Big thanks to Tom and Charlie! I've also uploaded a VAH-8 Fireballer A-3 on the cat.

- Summary:
- New today is Chester J. Zaremba's great collection of 1940's photos courtesy of his son, Jeff Zaremba. Chester was a Midway Barber and included in the collection is a couple of pages from the 20 Jan 1947 issue of The Midway Current about beards on the Midway. Chester is pictured among the examples. I also located several albums and loose photos of the Midway at NAS Bremerton that never made it back in the photo gallery after the reload last year. I've added links below to those photos.

- Summary:
- One new video from Gary Schreffler of the first hands off landing aboard an aircraft carrier. It took place in 1963 aboard the USS Midway. I received a photo of a nice oil painting of VF-151 aircraft 155739. I also got caught up with a lot of new photos from Midway'sAircraft.org. Many thanks to John Njaa, Frank Warren, David Hanson, Toney Herlevic, and the rest of the great volunteers at the hangar. Gary Schreffler has just released a new DVD. Not really Midway related, but if you're in to anti-submarine warfare you might want to check out his ASW Training Films DVD. I also wrapped up the 1947-48 USS Midway Med Cruise book over the weekend. That makes 19 complete and 7 to go.

Included are photos of aircraft launching for the Oct 1945 Navy Day in New York harbor, 1948 photos of the ship berthed next to the USS Wisconsin, and a photo of the ship pierside. Place and date are unknown, but it is roughly from the late 50's early 60's and possibly at Guam.

- Summary:
- New postal rates go into effect tomorrow, January 8, 2006. As a result the shipping amounts for the cruise books on CDROM and the GRS NAVAIR DVDs have gone up $0.20. I won't actually make the change on the store pages until tomorrow.
- SDACM volunteer Jeanette Olivera sent in some great photos of the new F9F-5 Panther and F-8K Crusader aboard the ship. I also received two early 1960's photos from Troy Prince.
